NEPA 101
Bark hosts regular trainings on the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA. This powerful law provides important opportunity for citizen involvement. The training covers the basic tenets of NEPA and other laws that guide the management of federal forest lands. In addition we provide information on how to use the Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA, to keep our government transparent.
NEPA ensures that the government discloses the impacts that its actions may have on the health of the environment or the people who depend on the environment. It forces government agencies, like the Forest Service, to complete an environmental assessment (EA) or an environmental impact statement (EIS). Part of the analysis process must include an effort to get information out to the public and allow for a sufficient opportunity for the public to comment on the proposal. Bark monitors this process for every project on Mt. Hood National Forest and surrounding Bureau of Land Management lands.
Starting to verge on wonky? Policy can be overwhelming and intimidating but NEPA is intended to protect your right to be involved in how your public land is managed. Knowing NEPA is an entry point into protecting your favorite places. Come join us to learn how to put this useful law into effect. No experience necessary.
Check out Barks events calendar to find out when the next training is being held or call the Bark office at 503-331-0374.
