Clackamas commissioners urge caution on gas pipeline

Clackamas County's commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Thursday questioning the need for the proposed Palomar natural gas pipeline.

The resolution, while stopping short of outright condemnation of the project, also said that nothing should be approved until numerous environmental questions are answered.

Approval of the resolution follows a community meeting in Molalla last week when a number of rural residents whose land would be affected by the 217-mile-long pipeline spoke against its construction.

As proposed by Palomar Gas Transmission Co., the line $800 million line would run from a liquefied natural gas terminal on the lower Columbia River to an interstate gas hub in central Oregon. A 47-mile stretch of the line would run through the Mount Hood National Forest.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to issue a decision on Palomar's proposal by the end of the year.
